Default bowman bar question

I'm looking at one for a 16 slim but have a couple of questions for those have installed one.
There is very little room between the strut and the fender.do the washers between strut/fender need to be removed? Is there anything protecting the fender from rubbing on the side plates? What gauge are the side plates?
Thanks.

Never ran a Bowman sissy bar so I can't answer your questions for sure. I wouldn't think the plate would harm your fender any more than the struts would. When the struts are loosened at the frame horns it should allow room for installation of the side plates. If you want an easy install check out Ginz Chopper sissy bars. The plate mounts outside the strut. Just got one for my Slim.

Have one on my slim. No problem mounting, bolts right on, you can get a thin stick on plastic, and put it on the inside of mount, if you are concerned about scratching the paint. Removed mine after 4000 miles and had no damage to paint. Very well built sissy bar, look great on the bike.

Slim S here, about 6,000 miles ago, not removed.
Fitted up perfect, works well, quality build.
Side plates are 1/8".
Black powdercoat is a good match for the original gloss black.
