Thinking of buying FXST and was advised that front controls will make my hip pain worse.....Im 68 yo and farting can make any malady I have worse! Also on mid control S Glide I had feet were always stretched out on front pegs.
I know that there is no definitive answer just advise.
What say ye?
Thanks
Hi,
Thankfully I don't suffer with any hip pain but always had really bad pain in the right knee during a long ride caused by the leg negotiating around the air filter.
I put mid controls on my '09 FXSTC last Year, now the knee's behind the air filter, no more aches and pains!
Oh and it handles better too!!
48 years old here, i have an fxstc and i have very bad hips and very inflexible hips. I dont find this bike to be any more uncomfortable than any other harley ive ridden in the past. No matter what bike i ride or how great it is i always have to stop and get off and take a break every hour to 1.5 or i cant go any further because of hip pain. You should see me walk after getting off of the bike after an hour lol its like im 100 for the first few steps. Anyways, idk whos saying the fxstc makes your hips hurt? not true i say.
I have really bad hip problems from having the one nerve severed. I prefer forwards, what I can't do is put my left foot down sometimes. Its a learning curve.
GAS B. I am curious.. what option did you use for the mids?. .did you go with Exile Cycles?
I also ride with mid controls.. I went el-cheapo and made my own mid controls..

.
I read about your home grown Mids and was very impressed y
Mine are mounted using the Exile kit, Dyna controls from eBay, drilled the existing inner primary cover and the outer primary cover is off a Dyna also from eBay. https://www.hdforums.com/forum/softa...softail-2.html
I'm 66 and my FXR has forwards, no problem. The Ultra floorboards cause occasional locking up of my hip where I have to just kick my leg out in the wind for a few seconds to relieve it. It's not bad enough for me to mount hiway pegs on the crashbars and assume the gynecologist pose yet though.
Depending on how tall you are you may want a taller seat height so when you do put your leg down(with bad hip) it's a lot easier. It might be tough with your leg bent. I find it easier to put my left leg down on the dual sport with 37 inch seat height. Its a little tougher on the dyna for me.
Also get as light a motorcycle as possible. Your hip holds the weight of the bike when stopped. Heavy bikes will bother the bad hip sooner.
The problem is weak hips. I had a problem with mine and saw a sports medicine doc. He recommended improving the hip strength w hip adductor exercises. They cured my hip pain in no time! Look em up on utube. BTW I'm 59 so no spring chicken!
