Default Picked Up a Project

Hi All I'm new to the forum and haven't been on a bike in a few years and wasn't planning on being on one anytime soon but came across this '06 Softail for a song (to the tune of $800) and couldn't pass it up.

Fella had banged it up a bit and needs a few items changed out but mechanically it appears to not have sustained any damage. What he did do was let it sit outside in his yard without an oil cap on the tank so I know its gotten water in it. Question is how much. So I'm looking for a little advice.

I drained the oil tank and a very small amount of water came out and practically no oil. My guess is that it poured out while the bike was laying down during the accident. Any ideas on how to drain the actual crankcase on these bikes? There is drain plug at the bottom of the crankcase but I know its sort of a no-no to open that plug up.

Any help would be appreciated.

Awesome purchase. I pray for those and never come across them. Sweet bike too. Yes, pull the plug it's the tranny, There's also engine oil and primary oil. Google 3 hole oil change.

Thanks. Yeah I've made some good deals in the past but not like this. Poor fella was still in a wheel chair and I think he had just given up.

I'm planning on changing all the fluids but I'm mostly concerned about the crankcase at this point. Tried turning the plug at the bottom of the right side crankcase but it wont budge and don't want to strip it. Its an odd size, a little larger than my 1/4" alan but too small for the next size up.

option: 5/8 socket if you can fit it between the shocks.

Thanks. That drains the oil bag and I've got that covered. Just trying to figure out draining the crankcase. May have to take it to a shop for the crankcase plug.

how come I never find those deals? sounds like a sweet project.. I love my softail. are you going to remove the oil tank an clean/flush it? I'd do it an the lines too. I'd put new oil in an run it a few minutes up to op temp an drain it again.

Yeah I think so too. I always wanted a softail. And I always wanted to run apes but now that I have a bike that has em I don't want em anymore, at least not these.

Got some sheet metal to change out. Tank is banged in on both sides, rear fender was smashed up but I straightened it out a bit. He gave me a stock rear fender he had just bought but its too much. I think I'll bob the bent one. Think I'll lose the front fender as well.

Needs new floorboards both sides and the right bracket and new air cleaner. That'll make it rideable. Then I'll start tweeking.

$800? What a steal. You could part it out for more. Drain everything, turn it over without spark plugs a few times, then blow compressed air in. Let it dry out. Would be a hoot if it starts and runs after a clean-up.
