I put an side mount oil cooler on my '15 Heritage earlier this summer and it had no apparent impact on engine cooling. I put Love Jugs Mighty Mites on this week and rode it without the fans today until the EITMS kicked in. I turned the fans on and it didn't kick in the rest of the day. I'd definitely try the head fans first if I had to do it again.
I have the fans on my Triglide, they do the job even when you are stuck in traffic. Unless you install an oil cooler with a fan it will not help in traffic

hold your hand on the back side of the cooler as youre going down the freewäy. if you're not feeling hot air something is wrong. mine is super hot air coming through it. its working.
I'm sure the oil cooler is cooling while moving, probably not as much as it might as I have wind deflectors on the bike. The head fans add cooling no matter what the speed. I initially put both on because the EITMS kicking on in stop and go traffic was annoying.

I had deflectors on my '06 Road king. They helped keep me warmer in the cold.I always took them off in the summer as they increased motor temp.
