Default 03 Softail and a Dakota digital

03 Softail rider here. I bought the Dakota digital speedo setup for my bike, thinking it was as easy as plug and play, like the other ones I've seen done. Boy was I wrong!!!

It seems with the 03 models and back, you have to go in the wiring harness to make the thing work. I took it to my local mechanic, and he is as nervous as a hooker in church about it. Then I had the bright idea you could take wire pins and plug them straight into the harness plug and connect that way, but unsure about that as well.

Anybody on here done this before? I'd appreciate ANY advice on how to get this done. Thanks in advance!

I thought '04 and '05 were the "different" ones. Best bet would be to call Dakota Digital to see if you can get some help.
Do you have a Service manual with a schematic? That would be a great deal of help to you to find the wires to splice into.

The backstory is I also took it to the dealership first, and they backed out of it too once I actually got there. I'm sure they had the manual on hand.

The mechanic here says he has the manual and he is every bit as competent as a factory man, but I get the sense it isn't something he wants to tackle.

That's why I asked about the pins and plug wire option. I was wondering if anybody else on here had done it and what was their solution.

Im not.sure. like I said, I took it to the local dealership (shall go unnamed) at first. Kept my bike @ an hour.then i got a phone call backing out of it. I even offered to pay service rates. No dice.

Nobody wants to seem to do it around here. I appreciate the schematic and all but what I'm really trying to get is somebody to say how hard/easy it was so I can show it to the mechanic.

There's a reason the mechanics aren't touching it. You can show them all the documentation you want, it won't change their minds.

What do you mean you will get the "factory speedo modified"? What's wrong with it that needs modification?

I have gone to led lights over my entire bike.

Looks, somewhat, but actually safer because ten times brighter.
Now the "looks" part came in when I surveyed the bike and saw that dim, dull speedometer sitting in a bath of LED light everywhere else. I decided to change it.

There are a few companies that will put led lights in the speedometer for a nominal fee. I will go that route.

Reason the dealership won't touch it? Is THAT the same reason when I took my bike to their last show the put me in the "radical" class because I have a 21 inch front wheel?
