Default Is it safe to start bike????

I replaced my cam cover, both tranny covers and primary cover. Because of which, I put bike on my jack. Now I've got all covers back on and I'm good on fluid in the tranny and primary. But when I check the oil level (haven't added any yet) the dipstick reads true for a cold bike.

I know I need to add what I lost but I'm assuming that the oil pump needs to turn on to fill the crankcase so I can check the level again. Is it safe to start it so oil pump will do it's thing? Or is it like the fuel pump where all I need to do is turn on ignition? I'd hate to burn the motor up just cuz I replaced a few decorative pieces. Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance!

You're not checking the level of the oil in the crankcase, but rather in the oil tank. The oil pump isn't in the game until the engine is cranked. You probably didn't lose enough oil out of the cam chest to make a difference. If you are at full/cold you are good to start the engine and when at operating temperature check for full/hot.

Yes I'm checking the tank. And it registers between the 2 marks which, according to the manual, is what is should register as when the engine is cold.
So just to make sure I'm understanding you correctly, the oil I lost from the crank chest isn't significant enough to prohibit me from starting the motor? In fact I should start it, let it warm up, then check dip stick again? At which point I'm sure I'll need to add a few ounces.

Yes, there isn't much loss from the cam chest.

If your really scared about it, maybe you could pull the plugs, crank her over for 10 seconds. then check levels. Just a thought.
