Default Heated Grip install - 2017 Slim

I've searched this forum and didn't come up with much. My wife is short and her fingers are small so wearing something like big heated gloves or even big leather gloves doesn't work.

HD Instructions suck ***, they tell you nothing, I have a service manual so I can get things done. So far it looks like this, instuctions https://serviceinfo.harley-davidson....US#d283495e214

Looks like I need part number which plugs into the ecm data port.... https://serviceinfo.harley-davidson....8?locale=en_US

In the bottom of the original instructions is says it can be wired to the headlight.. Now I'm all confused. Has anyone done this and what procedure did they go with, headlight or ecm data port?
If it's the ecm then I gotta remove fuel which is something I didn't want to do, it's a hassle.

Thanks for reading.

Don't know if this helps much, but here goes. I bought a '16 'S' to outfit with a sidecar. Being in Canada, heated grips are a normal accessory for me. When I asked what to use for heated grips, I was told that because of fly-by-wire, I would need a special heated grip unit - which they were pleased to supply. Perhaps this is true, in which case be careful with what you buy.

They sold me part no. 56100257 "Contoured Chrome and Rbbr Heated Grips" for among other models, '16-later Softails.

With that as background, the part you refer to for plugging in the digital reader (gray 6-prong outlet with rubber cap, found under the seat, rhs) is just an extension for the computer service reader plug that breaks into the harness for powering electrical accessories. It is sold as H-D Part No. 726743-11.

The problem with this bike over older ones is that the fuse box only consists of a small cluster of fuses - main power (40 amp), and 2 X 15 amp circuits. Its the black box about 2"X2"X1" under the seat. There's no where to fit an add-a-fuse in this, though.

An inexpensive way to find a power source for the grips would be to tap into a live, switched wire (typically the rear light wire is easy to find) for a low power, switched wire and install a 4-wire relay. Connect the main power and ground from battery. Fish the accessory power wire from the front of the bike and install.

I'd be reluctant to wire heated grips into the headlight loom, preferring to take the power directly off the battery by way of a relay.

Just my two cents FWIW.

Thank you for the reply.

The instructions show two methods of wiring those grips, headlight (for RK models) and using the wire extension harness I listed.

Bike has apes which requires an extension harness. I'm just pissed they don't have solid answers for someone who wants to add a simple set of heated grips. They make everything so damn difficult so you'll bring your bike to HD service for the install. That drives me further away and makes the OCD kick in.

I really didn't want to remove the tank, it's a friggin hassle, was hoping to go into the headlight look but it looks like the the method I posted is the one I need.

i really appreciate you chiming in.
