Has anyone come up with a solution to this annoying problem without having to install the flush mount or other aftermarket gas caps? I can hear it at speed and at idle and I wear a 3/4 face helmet.
Its a recurring problem Ive dealt with for over 20 years. Ive tried gluing the ratchet mechanism, inserting shims to tighten things up, using a hammer and punch to take out some of the play, but nothing really worked. I ended up just buying new caps every few years.
Drag Specialties has them for a good price.

Easy fix, take the cap off, flip it over on some soft closed cell foam or some towels or equivalent, and stake it in the groove closest to the center of the cap in 3-4 spots around the circumference with a flat tip screw driver and hammer. It doesn't take a whole lot, you just want to tighten it up a bit. And your rattle issue will be resolved, it's worked for me on several bikes anyway.

Are you sure that you are getting it tight enough? My stock gas cap is a little over 12 years old and I've never heard it rattle before.
New one doesn't help... replaced many over the years with brand new ones from the stealership only to have those buzz as well. Crappy design that won't ever fix it seems
Thanks for all your replies! Yes I am tightening it till it clicks and then some. When I am riding and I hear the buzz, I look down at the cap and it is vibrating and slowly spinning. I put my hand on it and it stops. Yes the cap is tight. It gives me an excuse to get that flush cap from H-D unless there are alternatives out there.
