apparently the manufacture assy part number and replacement numbers are different but the part is the same with different descriptions. i see that all the time in our books/computer listings at work. the manual calls it one thing, the parts catalog is something else.
though it may also support the license plate bracket, it is clearly a main structural support for the fender and anything that attaches to it..
Heck throw it away HD doesn't know what they are doing . Stuck it on there to confuse you and charge you more money. Of course when fender cracks from vibration down the road you can still blame HD. Most do
I better hurry and put mine back on. After 35,000 miles without it who knows what permanent damage I have done. I guess I am just too dumb to understand what a part truly does when I have actually had the bike apart with my own hands. I better just drop it off at the shop from now on.
