Thumbs down Mirrors on a Heritage

OK, call me stupid and you probably will!
I know mirrors are to see what is behind you and the stock mirrors on my new HD Heritage Classic does that just fine - or do they?
In a few different threads there are comments that the stock mirrors on their new bike had to go. WHY? Looks or Function?
What do you (anybody) look for when wanting to replace stock mirrors with a different set.
Other than a custom look, is there any difference, when riding and needing to see what is behind in the mirrors, that I don't know about?

It may have a lot to do with how them thangs look to ya. For me, I see H-D makes a black mirror set that is s t r e c h ed out on the horizontal for my '18 FLHC. I think that would give you a less chance of a blind spot.

Not stupid at all, I changed mine on my 16 Deluxe mainly for looks, but the extra length and the slightly larger mirrors made seeing behind me much easier, the slight tint on them stops some glare. For some reason they don't seem to vibrate as much either.

My first bike was a Sportster Forty-Eight, and one of the things I really loved about it was it’s mirrors are mounted under the bars. Not only did it look great, but I found the rear view to be much better. When I bought my Slim, I wanted to do the same thing with aftermarket mirrors, but I’d have to move the turn signals.

I just bought an ‘18 Deluxe, and I am super happy that I can mount aftermarket mirrors under the bars with zero problems. I am probably going to put the new mirrors on tomorrow.

Heheh Ludwig, you loving that Deluxe aye! Congrats again. Only mirror you need is a giant one on wheels riding beside you so you can see how sweet that 18 Deluxe looks. If it's mirrored on the other side you'll find me checking out Olive! 🙂😊😁😃🙂😊

Most people change out mirrors for style and it is an easy modification that helps them distinguish their bike from stockers.

Some people that have unusually wide shoulders or have a long torso or are are generally big and tall change mirrors or the stem in order to see better. This can be thought of as having a 21” windshield vs an 18” for example. Getting the bike to fit them.

The stock mirrors are fine for most people most of the time.

Another factor is if you change handlebars, sometimes you need to compensate for the different relative position with a different mirror or stem.

H-D chrome is very thick and well plated. Make sure that if you buy after market mirrors that the chrome is as good. I bought a set of chromed mirrors with eagles embossed in front of them, and although they looked nice, the chrome started to flake off at the edges after one season and they were more prone to vibration. I went back to the originals and am glad that I did.

After reading the various comments, I see (no pun intended) that ther are vision benefits to a bigger mirror and/or these split vission mirrors you linked me to. I guess i'm not that stupid, but I just did not realize that there were blind spots I needed to be able to see. When I can scrape up the price, I think I will try these split vision Mirrors. Mostly good reviews makes me feel they may be worth the cost. Of course they don't look too bad either.
