Macdracer, I know exactly what you are talking about. Almost every time I start my 07 SoftailCustom I get a loud bang on startup. I mean loud, like somebody smacking the crankcase with a sledge. Yeah, I've read all the threads and the explanation that there are some springs that bottom out when the slack is taken up. And the dealer says it is OK. But anything hitting itself this hard this often is bound to self-destruct before long. I think we need a solution from the MoCo.
Incidentally, this is not to be confused with people having loud straight-cut 5th gears or shifting problems, which is basically what that thread on noisy trannys is about.Mine shifts kinda clunky and 5th gear whines a little, but those aren't problems for this bike. The sledgehammer on startup sounds really wrong.
Changed to Mobil 1 75w-90 in trans and v-twin in motor.....much quieter and smoother shifts after 100 miles of riding. I have BSS pipes since new so can't hear many noises.
I'm curious about this. It seems like most responses talked about general transmission or engine noise right after startup. Something I've noticed on mine is that I get a single knock when starting up (which seems more in line with the response to this thread talking about the springs bottoming out). The knock I get isn't exactly sledge hammer loud and I had written it off as a characteristic of the Softail transmission on startup.
I'll probably mention this to the HD guys when I bring it in for its 500 mile fork checkup, but I'm gathering that the response will pretty much be "that's the way it is"?
