Problem solved..!! Guess what... checking all the possible causes list, I decided to check the fuel system, and I found the cause of the sputtering and detonation: the fuel regulator beside the fuel filter was loose... placed it in the right space and tightened everything again and the bike rolls like silk...
I am going to guess you are referring to the pressure relief valve inside the tank. Fits in that pocket with an o-ring fitting. Fuel pump runs all the time when motor runs maintaining 62 lb pressure so idle all the way to WOT has fuel. I have seen the housing warped and let it get cocked. Then bike won't idle. Also why I say if fuel filter gets stopped up, first sign is idle problem. Why I never worry about a fuel filter unless it causes problems.
Most all fuel here is filtered from the pump.
I have a 2005 fat boy 95 it started to run bad missing and popping out the air cleaner, replaced coil, plugs checked all connections, friend of mine suggested the gas lines in tank may have a worn through hole, took out fuel assembly from tank and replaced everything new. After looking at the old parts everything including the hoses were fine, finally found the problem with the pressure regulator, the o-ring that connects to the pressure regulator housing was blown out less than a 1/4 inch and made the system lose pressure, replaced this with new regulator and it fixed the popping and stalling, now runs like new, hope this helps
