Popping noise from engine

I just recently finished customising my 1989 Sportster, new springer front end, new spoke rims, chopped the rear fender, etxc. I recently took off the air filter to change it and the gasket broke apart, as i did not have another gasket I just bolted it back on and now I am getting a popping noise. I am just wondering if this can be the reason I am getting this noise. This is my first bike and am fairly new to working on motorcycles. Idid all the customizations myself and would really appreciate some help. Thanks in advance.

I thought i was in the sportster section. That is the section i clicked on, but anyway thanjs a lot for all the help and not being an ******* about it.

In answer to the question. In my opinion yes it can, I would get a new gasket, plus you don't want to dust your motor for lack of buying the proper part. Ride safe.
