Earlier today I Went to adjust my shocks (less stiff) but when I went to loosen the lock nut the shock ( both) just spin. How do you secure the shock to loosen the nut.

It would help if you told us what year/model/etc..
Since this is in the Softail forum, assuming a 2017 or earlier; loosen the locknut on the front of the shock, then turn shock with special spanner for this purpose. If the locknut is stuck to the shock, put a wrench on the nut and give it wack with a rubber mallet, should break free.
