Aloha,
I'm a brand new HD rider, getting up to speed in Paradise on a '98 Softail Custom I just inherited.
I want to build a decent tool kit that can help me out in an unfortunate pinch.
I've got an old Allen and Torx sets (bits and sockets) and of course the other basics. What is absolutely necessary to pack along?
I have never carried many tools on the road. And have never needed them. If you keep your bike in good condition and use the manual to check the "critical fasteners" that helps a lot. I carry one of the HD 8 way screw drivers, one of those funky looking HD wrenches that has multiple sizes, a 6 inch adjustable wrench and a leatherman. Pre ride checks and keeping on top of maintenance means I haven't used any of those tools in a long time. Good luck with your bike.
Hey thanks Marti!. I plan on continuing pre-checks and keeping the bike in tip-top shape. I am strictly wondering what bare necessity tools I should bring along.
For example, the notorious vibrations of a Harley can loosen the set screws that hold my mirrors in place. That takes an Allen wrench, so I'm not leaving home without that.
Would there be any other, higher odds mishaps that I could be prepared for, and what should I pack for it?
Some guys carry a tire kit and small compressor, I think its worth doing. Im looking into it myself. I know a you can buy adapters for your battery trickle charger pig tail to run the compressor.
+1...I also have AAA Premier which covers motorcycles. When I first started touring on my Ultra I carried a ton of crap and never had to use it, thus taking valuable storage space. I now only carry a flashlight and zip ties.
Cmpr & a tire kit wont help with an FXST (Spoke wheels)
I carry just basics (like others)
Rarely needed em (Tighten my rear turn signal bar once).
Usually, I just loan them to others, AND my phone charger,
AND my tire gauge.
As prev stated, just chk everything befor you go. ALWAYS
check the tire air pressure (when cold).
Chk eng oil (when warm)
