I recently installed a Willie G gas cap on my FXLR (to avoid rattling) and love it. I ordered a new left side cap to match but it won't line up. I know the mount is stick on so I wonder if it was stuck on wrong? It wouldn't matter with the stock cap but the Willie G looks stupid with the bottom sitting at 4 o'clock, 8 o'clock or 12 o'clock. I'm thinking of pulling the mount with the cap on it and re-gluing it on in the proper position. Has anyone done this? I don't want this $50 cap rolling down the expressway! Would 3M emblem tape work? 1st pic is where the cap 1st fits onto the mount. 2nd is where the cap has been turned to lock. Third is the mount. Inserted into groves Turned to lock.
Thanks
Thanks Mchad. I just got back from Autozone and bought 3M Super strength molding tape. The guy there said it was the best they had. We'll see in a bit.
Well the left side is on using the 3M Super Strength tape. The foam is a tad bit thicker than the stock tape so there is more flex in it but it's not bad. Seems to be stuck good. Time will tell if it holds as well as the factory tape. I'll post back if it fails.

how did you pull it off? Pliers? Fishing line under it?
I put the original cap on and stuck my fingers under it and pulled (on one side). I went around the cap to see where I could here it giving way and pulled carefully until it came off. BEFORE I did that i placed my new cap over the mounting bracket and used painters tape to mark where the new cap will sit. You may want to use the new cap to pull the bracket off as it's a bit of a pain removing and installing a cap on a bracket that isn't fastened down. I was just worried I'd break the mounting tabs on the new cap.
**Be careful not to let the cap touch the paint as your prying it off. Maybe use a bit of tape under it.
