Default Checking Primary Oil Level / ‘17 Slim 103

I went to swap out the derby cover on my ’17 Slim primary, and it looked like there was very, very little to no oil in there. I had just ridden it maybe 4 hours before, but the bike wasn’t hot at all when I went to take the derby cover off. I tried to make the bike as level as possible. It may have been leaning to the left a little, but the jiffy stand was on a regular-sized brick, and was close to level as I could get it. I checked, and I could find any obvious evidence that the thing was leaking. It’s got about 3600 miles on it, and the last time it would have been checked would have been the 1000 mile service.

Questions:

- Am I supposed to check the primary oil when the bike is hot? I know it is recommended to drain the oil after the bike is at normal riding temp, but I couldn’t find anything about just checking the oil level.

- I know it’s sometimes difficult to tell what the primary oil level actually is. Does anyone have a trick I could try to be sure? Can the level just look really low, but not really be low?

- If there isn’t obvious signs of leaking, does anyone have an idea why the level is so low?

Thanks,

Buzz

Get a flashlight. You should see the oil level come right up to the bottom of the clutch plates so you'll have to look down into the primary to see it. Whether its cold or hot shouldn't matter too much.

+1, With your bike close to level you can take the Derby cover off with no oil loss. It only takes a quart to fill it to spec.

Thanks, guys. I got the bike as level as I could, and checked the level with a flashlight. It was exactly where it was supposed to be.
