Ok, problem solved or at least it seems to be. I am certainly no mechanic by any means and I am sure all bikes are different but as for mine the K&N setup doesn't work. It is like you guys said, it vents in the filter and for some reason it causes the umbrella valve(s) to flutter and toss mass quanitis of oil out. I went to the dealer and got the SE setup and it vents to the throttle body and works fine. You would have to really have seen this to believe how much oil it did puke out before. I am sure they work great for some and my comments are just because of the way it worked out on my bike. I am old school and have used K&N before in most all my cars but never again for me. I think their engineering should have used the breather tubes instead of the instructions just saying they won't be reused. I am very disappointed in the whole 3909 setup and right now the thing is laying dormant on my workbench where it can't ever cause any more trouble .
Guys, I really appreciate the responses and your help. I was ready to go back to stock and you folks gave me the answer and now I have a great sounding bike I can actually ride without oil dripping out from the blasted under-engineered K&N LOL..ok, I am po'ed at them.I'm allowed. Thanks to all who responded. I appreciate all your help!
regards and ride safe, Larry in Tennessee
I am using the K&N 3909 Kit and no problems at all... aftermarket exhaust Big Radius... I wonder if you installed the K&N kit correctly? did you put the washer in correctly on the breather bolt (for fuel injected models you need to add the extra washer).
Stro, was good to have you hanging in there with me thru this. clueless, I thought that too so I checked everything down to the washers in the right place. I am an electrician by trade, not a mechanic but I have a good knowledgs of tools and instructions. I thought maybe just an honest mistake but it was all in right as per the instructions. I think all bikes are different cuz I have none of the popping on decel that I have heard about associated with the Fuelpack and maybe my bike just wasn't wanting theK&N because of the pipes with their particular backpressure or a hundred other things. I have no idea but I had to add a half quart of oil from it all and today I rode about 100 miles and all is good, still on the full mark. One good slightly used (HIGHLY OILED) K&N for sale LOL...just kidding. I wouldn't wish this one on anyone.
