I installed my slip-ons and FuelPack along with the K&N 3909 a little over a week ago. The bike runs great and power seems up a little but hard to say for sure. I checked the plugs and things are looking ok except for this. The holes where the breather tube hoses came off are spitting oil into the air filter. I did like some said and drained a quarter of a quart of oil from the tank and it is still doing it. If I were to ride a couple hundred miles I'd need to clean the filter...jees..help me or I am going to give up and put it back to stock. I hate to for one reason the money I spent getting the sound I wanted and I sware it seems to run cooler but I can't stop and clean the air filter while out on a long ride..I've ridden it a couple hundred miles and no worse but it is really spitting oil out. I have a service manual and it says if I remove the tubes it will cause the 'butterfly's ' to vibrate..is this what i'm getting? I'm at a loss and I so wanted the Harley sound. any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Larry
thanks for the reply. I did go look at my factory air cleaner and no oil at all in the filter or the breather lines. I am at a loss here. Could the change in back pressure from more open exhausts cause this?
I looked in the service manual once again and it said removing the breather tubes will cause the 'umbrella' valve to flutter. I thought it said the butterfly so maybe that is a clue? I am sure it wasn't doing this,or at least not to this extent, before the mods. The factory breather is dry and after 200 miles the K&N is motor oil covered so I have something going on. Tomorrow I'll put it back to stock and see if that cures it. I love the sound and the fact it seems to run cooler so it is hard to go back I have heard of others who overfill the oil tank having this but mine has never been overfilled so not that. I agree, hopefully atech will chime in and if not then tomorrow she goes back to origional
How hard do you ride it anddid you try running without the breather tubes (you need them)? Sounds to me that maybe 1 of your umbrella valves is stuck open.It is normal to get some oil spitting into the throttle body if you run it hard but yours sounds like an aweful lot. I have seen others who have had there umbrella valves stick and puke quite a bit of oil after a dyno tune.
another thing comes to mind...That K&N setup does not vent the oil mist into the throttle bodyit pukes it into the air filter. where the SE and stock setup has tubes that go to the throttle body. and prevent the fluttering.
I would go back to your stock filter setup or get a SE and see if that helps...If not you have a stuck umbrella valve and you will need to replace them. Sometimes they will not close like they are supposed to but eventually work themselves out (Sometimes)
I am going to put it back to stock today and hopefully it will be ok then. I don't know how to unstick the umbrella valves if they are stuck . I thought it would be ok to do cuz others have the K&N setup but evidently my bike doesn't like it. Thanks for your responses. Sometimes I guess things just don't work out. regards, Larry
it's not the K and N's fault, my bike "misted" oil in stock form. Mine only did it when winding the engine past the factory shift points. I now have a Hypercharger, which vents into the carb under the breather. No more oil misting now!!! Unhooking the breather tubes won't fix it, the bottom end of the engine has to breathe out. Good luck!
If they are stuck you have have to take the rocker box off and replace them. I have a feeling it is your setup as it is not vented directly into throttle body whereas the SE is. I have a SE setup with a K&N filter and it works. You will occ. get a drop or 2 on the plate but not in the filter like your talking about and certainly not the quantity you mentioned unless your umbrella valve is not working right, whichmakes me think that is your problem as there are no tubes and will make them flutter letting excessive oil out.
