Engine guards, anyone?

They can protect you engine in a low speed crash or when you drop the bike at a standstill. They might protect your leg under the same circumstances. They might hurt you. Notice the disclaimer put on 'em now? Usually something to the effect of "These ugly chrome monstrosities ain't to protect yer leg, but yer bike, and only when yer going so slow it don't really matter."
And yes, they might protect you in a "normal" crash, as they did Ironhead. But they might also injure you as they did me. I went down on a dirt (mud) road in Wyoming, running about 20 mph. The crash bar folded and pinned my leg against the footboard and brake pedal. The pedal sliced me open to the shin bone with a ragged gash about 3 inches long. I was in the middle of nowhere, and had to patch myself up.
Bottom line is they can offer some protection to your bike, and to you. They might also hurt you under some circumstances. If you like the way they look, put 'em on and enjoy them. If you don't, leave 'em off. And some folks make oil coolers outta them! Choices, choices ... ain't y'all glad we got 'em?
