Hey guys, I posted this a few months ago but have since checked a few more things but still having the issues..... just bought an 09 fatboy. 3200 miles on it. When I test rode it I noticed that when letting out on the clutch it pulled forward normal but as I got the lever completely out only then did it sound like it fully engaged. I figured no problem. Gonna changed all fluids anyway Ill do a clutch adj. So...I did. Harley oil and Several clutch adj. For the clutch adjustment inside the primary I tried all the different suggestions from the 1/2 turn to the whole turn to just off the plate. Anyway...if i shift slow, i can keep it from sounding like it finishes going into gear at the lever stroke end but if Im trying to get on it in anyway , 1st 2nd and 3rd only, it acts like I described. I also find that it gets worse as it heats up. Cool morning rides into its doesn't seem to bad but 98F ride home and its really noticeable. I bought new bars controls and cables and went thru the process again but i just cant see to find anything wrong or info on my exact condition out there that someone else is having. I haven't pulled outer primary to inspect clutch plates yet but thats my next check unless someone has another idea. Neutrals easy to find and the bike doesn't try to lurch at stop lights with lever pulled in.
I have since inspected the clutch plates and everything looks fine. Plates still shiny, fiber plates in good shape with no signs of damage. Yesterday on the 90 degree ride home I noticed at a stop I could pull in the clutch lever and let it out slowly, while still sitting still, and I hear that same sound from the primary. I cant seem to find anything describing exactly what Im seeing here. It doesnt whine, not rattle, not neutral issues, and 4th 5th and 6th gears is all good.
I have no clue myself, new to HD but was talking to a friend that has been a life long HD rider. Telling him about doing a 3 hole oil change on my 09 Custom. Rode around for about 45 minutes before changing oil. He said on his bike when putting 32 ounces he has to let a few ounces out sometimes for the clutch to act right. Critical not to over fill even by a few ounces, he says 28 ounces works for him. I am here to learn more about my bike, so that is him speaking, not me.
