My 03 Heritage will start and run for 5 to 10 mins and die. It will not restart for at least hour after it dies. It has a stock carb which I took apart and cleaned and that hasn't helped. I haven't been able to ride for about a year now (injury). While I was down I replaced the cam chain tensioner and went with a hydraulic system. I mention that in case that might be a factor. The bike has 40k and has always been good to me. Any thoughts? Thanks
Sounds like a heat related problem. Bad or loose connection that acts up when hot.. Once the bike cools down, the faulty wire or bad connection reconnects are the bike starts. Other possibility is a partially plugged fuel filter. While the bike sits, over time enough fuel seeps through and it with start, The bike burns off fuel faster than the filter can feed it and eventually starves and dies.
Hi Bob, I agree, I believe it's heat related. At first I thought it was fuel issue thats why i went thru the carb and checked the petcock and filter. Seems to be plenty of fuel. I'll clean all the electrical connection next. But I'm leaning towards the control module or one of the three sensors that feed it info. Thanks for responding. Be well.
Some good ideas posted, another one to check is whether your gas cap is not venting, Next time it dies remove the cap and see if you can restart. If so, great. If not, likely heat related....

This is the easiest thing to check, and a very possible cause...
Another could be the coil is going bad... they tend to fail when hot at first, rather than fail all at once.... could check for spark when it dies....If no spark when it dies, then check wires to the coil. If they are good, then check coil itself... If the coil checks out OK, then it could even be the ECM, as it energizes the coil circuit when the bike is started (believe through a relay). I would suggest getting the electronics manual and following the diagnostic steps to solve this problem, rather than throwing parts at it hoping to fix it...
One short cut if you wish.... I read where someone suggested bringing CRC freeze spray on a ride. When the bike shuts down, cool the coil with the freeze spray and see if it starts up... if so, your coil is going out when hot.... sorry, but don't remember the resolution using that technique...
