Hey guys. Wondering if changing out the stock exhaust on a 2008 Fatboy to a 2 into 1 system is a "slip-on" setup or does it require a complete exhaust swap (head pipes)?
Would it require tuning afterwards?
Buddy wants hard bags that wont fit with stock exhaust. He is not particular to 2 into 1 but figured that would be the only route he could go to get the clearance for bags.
You have to get a complete new exhaust system it cant be done with different slipons.
V&H , Cobra, Thunder header, Sampson, and others all make them. if your doing it because you need to fit bags be sure the new system is below the axal, some of the 2-1 are still high and you cant get larger bags on especially a hard bag conversion
I have the V&H Pro pipe on my 2002 Fatboy. What exhaust do you have on now and do you have a better A/C? If you already have that and a free flowing exhaust you could get away without a tune but your engine might not like it and you are probably not getting full effect of your mods. I suggest you at least do a test run after installation and make sure they check air/fuel ration and performance in the cruising range too, WOT is not the only thing that matters as some seems to think.

He has what looks like the stock exhaust. I know he plans to get a K&N air filter but I dont think thats the same thing as getting a whole new AC. He is looking at the Bassani 2in1 for the cost and the fact that it shouldnt hit the hard bags he wants to install. If he just got the air filter and the Basani and I helped him install, I was wondering if he would need to take it somewhere to get it tuned and if so how much does that normally run?
I think he should get an A/C to actually take advantage of the exhaust. If you open outlet you also needs to open intake, otherwise that will be a bottleneck. Exhaust will not do that much if more air are anyway not going in the engine. I would say you need a tune with 99% certainty or the bike will run very lean and probably damage the engine in the long run (if you do both A/C and exhaust). At least thats what I've learned.
dam - trying to convince him to just go with leather bags but he wants hard ones. This is gonna cost him. All the painted hard bags Ive found wont fit with stock exhaust,
Must be alot of used A/C and exhaust in the US? Even here in the Netherlands I find second hand Harley part very easily for decent prices. I can probably get a used 2-1 and A/C for 300-400. Dunno about the price for dyno tune in the states, guess it varies quite some depending on where you are and go. Good luck!
