Make sure you clean your tank real well when you spill gas. Use a quick detailer or at least water and a clean rag (not a gas station paper towel -- may as well use sandpaper). Gas will eat away your wax and if left on there, will gradually etch and discolor your clearcoat.
DO as TUNAMAN says just hold nozzle and slowly add the gas also it is handy to have a couple of DAMP paper towels in case of a tank wipe off. PURPLE HAZE.
I tried setting the automatic fill gizmo on the nozzle once at a Cumberland Farms station. It didn't turn off and gas poured all over the HOT engine. I almost crapped myself thinking it was going to burn up the bike. Needless to say I will never do that again. I fill slowly and watch the level in the tank as I go. Can be tough if it's sunny or you have your sunglasses on.
This is caused by the backwash when the end of the nozzle is blocked by gas and trips the auto shutoff. Best to put the end just far enough into the tank to keep the gas going the right direction and manually shut it off before the gas reaches the ring inside the filler. If you need to fill the tank as much as possible, top it off by tapping the lever.
WASH tank with soap and water and lay some good Carnuba Wax on tankand wipe off, it should help better than not having any thing on paint. GOOD LUCK! PURPLE HAZE.
