Having some trouble with the softail. Battery was dead the other day. Got a charge on it, attempted to start it and wouldn't turn over. Decided to attempt a jump (bad idea in hind-sight). When the cables were attached (correctly mind you) the subaru's horn would start to sound with sparks off the battery. Didn't continue. Turned the bike on, power is on, fuel pump starts to go, but check engine light now and nothing happens when hitting the start button.
Run diagnostics which show multiple codes including BCM codes of B2271, U0100, and a bunch that have to do with speedo and ABS. ECM also shows no codes, but when attempting to interrogate it, says "No RSP".
Worried that the ECM is fried. Checked the fuses (there are 3 that I could find for a heritage) and they all appear to be intact.
Goes to dealer tomorrow. Just looking for some thoughts ahead of shipping it out.
well it goes tomorrow. But if anyone has a better suggestion before then Im all ears.
note theres nothing coming from the handlebar switch when I hit it. Turns on. Goes to run. Hear the pump. But doesnt even attempt to turn over when I hit the start button.
If a battery is dead and the bike is at home, don`t jump start it, fix it...
Jumper cables and battery tenders are not troubleshooting tools.
The battery already went dead on you once, have it load tested, or just replace it.
you don't know why it went dead, and i think it is beyond this guy, and most people.
but if something didn't happen when he jumped it, might be more. Assuming he is descriptive enough in what happened, plus jump starting with a vehicle can be a little skill. People are afraid to rev it up, he sounds afraid.
without a meter pretty much wasting time.
I might not be afraid to chuck a battery in, if it was old. Doesn't guarantee something not damaging battery, but not as likely.
Why do people think jump starting is bad? Granted I don't like stressing batteries, which is why I don't do load tests. Dead battery and charging system is being stressed. But the ***** foot around and wonder why it doesn't start. Both are 12 volt systems with regulators.
So my overall concern is theres a deeper problem now. Before the jump attempt, the battery just wouldnt turn over. Youd hear it clicking like a low battery might. the bike would turn on. No engine codes. Nothing. After the jump attempt, suddenly theres a ton of codes. I sat the battery on tender for two days and since and the bike appears to have a good battery just by the tender status. But where before when attempting to start I heard it at least attempt to turn over, now theres nothing when the start button is pressed. Despite the headlights and all other systems appearing to be operational.
Im not against jumping a bike and have done it before on other bikes.
