2016 Softail deluxe- great price, should I take the plunge?
I have my eye on a 2016 very low mileage softail deluxe. It has been at the dealer for quite a long time and so it has hit the realistic floor price. I plan to test ride as soon as the weather breaks, but I would like to get impressions from folks on here who have experience. I am guessing that the ride quality and motor on the 2018+ are superior, but this is not a primary bike and more around town usage. No 100+ mile trips. Thanks for any opinions, positive and negative.
I love my softail. No storage, no bagging, logging long miles, but a great weekend bike to cruise with friends. I was never really a long miler cruiser in the first place. I'll ride a few hours over the weekend, but I love my softail.
Put another way...anyone out there with pre-M8 softail that would say don't do it?
I love my 17 Deluxe.
Would I do it again, YES.
Rode the 18 Heritage just before I bought her, no regrets.
They work great as a local cruiser or long trips (with the right mods).
I wouldn't hesitate to go cross country on both, based on their reliability... But I'm a little older now and have a twin cam bagger for the long, multi-day rides....
There is absolutely nothing wrong with a good twin cam bike... And there are plenty of time tested mods for twin cams that can make them run with, or past an M8...
If it fits your budget, and your style.... Go for it... !
If you can get a price you like it, by all means get it!!! Do you have another bike? Not that it matters, just curious. Deluxe is a beautiful classic style. I don't have one, but I do have a M8 breakout, AND a twincam RoadKing. M8 is awesome engine, but I'll admit(I bought the m8 first) that twincam heavy king really surprised me. Great sound too. Good luck! Don't forget to post LOTS of pics! If you live where there's shitty weather right now, I bet they'd do some dealing!? Dealers gotta be starving
I like the post that asks, "see if it chooses you"... From that perspective, IF it chooses you, then DO IT. IMO, stay away from the M8... Long term reliability of the twins is far superior than all the garbage coming up with the M8s...
I was in a very similar situation a few months ago. My local dealer had a 2016 Deluxe sitting on the floor for quite a while. When they dropped the price to what I thought was more than reasonable, I jumped on it. This is my first Softail (after having a number of sporties and metric bikes), and I have no regrets about not getting an M8. I don't have anything against the M8, but I know the TC is a powerful platform that you can do a lot with.
Also, I may have been biased at the time, but after signing the paperwork and then looking at the TC side-by-side with an M8 Deluxe, I thought the chrome looked much better on the older bike.

I'd think that dealers would be starving too, but will see. I test rode it today and sort of fell for it. Ergos are exactly how I like it, the TC is surprisingly powerful, the suspension is not nearly as crappy as advertised and as far as looks, it may be the quintessential cruiser out there. Hopefully can come to an agreement tomorrow
