I don't believe that where the caliper piston grabs, along the 360° of the rotor, has any effect on braking, as long as the caliper mount is strong enough to handle the forces involved.

I have seen calipers on all positions of a rotor over the years... the caliper position seems to be dictated by aesthetics (on motorcycles) and/or ease/practicality of the mounting system (motorcycles, cars, & trucks).....

I like Tom84FXST's suggestion to use the 2009 FXSTSSE3 CVO Harley springer 4 piston caliper and mount... it should bolt right up, increase braking over OEM caliper on your bike, and look pretty good in the bargain....
