Apparently this was done when they were using the 10 digit VIN numbers to hopefully prevent grinding and re-stamping a bogus number.
During this period they were known as "Posident" stars.

Guys, if someone is looking for a good website where to check vin number and vehicle history, I can recommend a good one. I find it accidentally but I am sure it will be useful for everyone. Here it is quickppsr.com.au
