200mm Hogpro kit on Deuce
Maybe we got off to a bad start! You have good information and I appreciate your concern. We feel that .125 clearance on each side is sufficient for a custom installation.
On the 2002 Deuce that we tested before we sold this kit we taped the inside of the fender with blue painters tape, because we too are concerned with safety and performance. After a week of riding (on a lowered bike, sometimes with passenger) there was no signs of rubbing, either on the sides or on top. That was with an AM 23. Of course the 42 is about 1/10" narrower, and probably a better tire compound for the street.
Thanks, Jerry

Anyway, I just figured out that your a sponsor(I looked to the right of the screen), so please understand my position, and understand I'm not trying to step on your toes, we both drink from the same pond. Its completely seperate from your products and has nothing to do with them or their quality.
You sound like you've done your homework on HDs in general, and in the wide-tire dept. I have a 04 Fat Boy and want to go wider. I was thinking the DM Custom Kit II for soft-tails, with 18x5.5 rear and 18x3.5 front wheels, the Avon 200 and 130 respectively; and DM's 9" rear fender. I do like good handling especially with 2-up (~330 lbs passenger and day-bag). I'm not the type who drags pipes, mostly cruising backroads, and 70-80 mph max on the interstate, but still want good handling in the event of an emergency and I have to avoid something.
Sounds like you don't recommend the 200 and prefer the 180 in the rear...but I do like the look of the 200 on the Fat Boy...but looks ain't everything if it doesn't ride right and isn't safe. In either case (200 or 180), I have to cut-off the internal fender rails. Do you think it's possible to go the AVON 200 route with the 'stock' '04 wide belt/pully/brake caliper-rotor/swingarm like the DM Custom folks claim? Is the back wheel offset with this set-up? Ideally, I would prefer the 200 rear with the license plate inset in rear fender and smaller rear turn signals. I was thinking the 18" Sturgis Desperado wheels to keep the Fat Boy look. I may want to lower the back just a little and still have proper clearance for rear suspension compression and proper handling physics. There's a guy on the DM site with this set-up on his Fat Boy... check it out...
I'd really appreciate your experience and thoughts and part/manufacturer/kit recommendations for both a 200 -and- 180 set-up, and what work is involved in each scenario. I want to think this through before taking the leap.
Sincerely appreciated...

The information offered there lead me to think that I could mount a Metzler 170/60 without changing any stock componants. The Metzler was close in width to any other brand 180. I'm sure that a 200 adds a little more testasterone, but after running the stock 160, a 180-like tire would be wide enough for me.

I don't know if I can add anything to this "conversation", but I was on another board recently were the subject was similar - mounting a wider rear tire on a Deuce.
