Default What is this??

Hi everyone-wondering if some of you can help me figure something out. I have a custom softail that was started up after sitting for almost a year. It fired right up however some type of black oil (I assume engine oil) came shooting out of a cylinder below the foot pedal on the right side. We immediately killed the engine but nobody at the local Harley shop knows what it is by the pictures. Hoping someone here will be able to help tell me what the part is and why there would be a firehose of oil coming out of it! I inherited the bike. Thanks for your help!

The bike-cylinder is on this side.

This is where the oil shot out from.

A view from a little further out

A view from under the bike

did you add oil to the bike before starting it the first time? do you know where the other end of that hose is attached? is the hole in the "cylinder" threaded?

you may want to post this in the EVO section as well ...

That is just a goofy aluminum can on the end of the breather tube, it serves no purpose.

Pull it off and simply route the hose back, not in front of the rear tire.

The bike was sitting for some time and the oil went past the check valve in the oil pump and down into the crankcase.

When you started the bike, the scavenge pump moves the oil back to the tank, but a good amount of this oil may just be barfed out the breather hose.

Put a pan under the bike, don`t add any oil, start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.

It will eventually quit spitting oil out the breather hose.

Once the oil from the crankcase is all back to the tank (or in the pan), you can add oil, but don`t add to full until you ride it a bit.

The proper level checked when hot, with bike vertical should be about 1 to 1-1/2 inches below the filler neck.

Suspect that's why the plugs gone

Somebody figured out why it didn't work and didn't want to pull it all off again.

The old joke where the guy says the last thing I remember seeing was the monkey trying to put the plug back in...
