Have a 2003 Deuce with a MCL-2002 digital gauge installed by previous owner. I am getting an intermittent issue where the Speedometer and Gear indicator go out. The RPMs continue to function fine.
I can't find a rhyme or reason and can't "create" the issue. Seems to be random. I've pulled off the gauge housing and all wires seem to be connected properly.
The gear indicator functions by calculating the speed and the RPM by way of magic. The RPM is measured differently than the speed. Sounds like the speed sensor is going out or has a loose wire.

Is that the VSS I have read about?
i dont have any idle or stalling issues - so wasnt sure if I was checking the boxes
Something to consider. It could be the gauge. Digital anything on a motorcycle may not last and who knows how long it was on before. Might be worth having an analog gauge handy to check a few of those things.

im not against going back to analog for sure. The gauge is nice; but a bit overkill. Im going to work on swapping out the VSS and see if that clears it up.
Replacing the VSS was crazy simple. Dealer had one in stock. 2 bolts to slide up splash guard for access to plug and 1 Allen screw To remove sensor.
i cut the cable on the old rather than snake it through the tight wiring or remove the other wires, reinstalled, connected cable then tucked it back in and zip tied.
havent tested yet because its about to storm. But will post results.
