I notice a light shake in the front of my bike (2000 FXST) anytime I accelerate a bit aggressively above 65M/H, the shake gets even scarier with the wind buffeting etc..
I tried to let go the handle bar to see, but it was ok, but then again, rolling off the throttle seems to cure the shake,
Bumps get it a bit nervous too.
I am not sure if this is normal to Softail Standards ? or is this something I should check ?.. (Forks, suspension, etc..)
Oh.. at certain pot holes I hear a very noticeable 'CLUNK' in the front end, not sure if this is related ! .
If you are hearing a clunk, your steering head bearings are more than likely a bit loose. You can test this by putting the bike on a jack, stand in front of the front end, grab both forks securely, and try pushing and pulling on them. any movement at all, the bearings will need tightened.
I am not that mechanically inclined, so I will do the fork test, although I am not sure where is the colt for the fork head to tighten, at the top of my fork there is a Chrome cap. I think previous owner was obssessed with covering every bolt with some sort of Chrome or Skull .
I will look at the service manual and see what I can do..
Hey also check your fork pinch bolts in addition to the fork steering head. YES, anytime the front end feels shaky it is risky to ride the machine. If your not surewhat your doing, find someone who doesorconsult a dealer.
Hi guys,
Did the first check, and I did lift the bike, tried to push and pull on the forks, they were pretty solid.
Now moving to 'tightening' the 'fork head Bolt' .. is this under the chrome cap on the top ? is this what the service manual call 'fork stem nut' ? .
