So this happened... I bought a Cross Bones. Rode the crap out of it and modified it to my liking. I was told I had detracted from the value of the bike when I made the mods. I was then told that trade in on the bike was $7500 with current mileage. Seems to me that owning the bike caused it to lose value so that didn't matter. But I added hard bags, changed bars, wheels, pipes, made it something I was proud of and something I enjoy to ride. If I cared about the investment, I'd have put that money in stocks.

My money, my choice. It's a victimless crime, like punching someone in the dark.

For me, the changes to my Heritage were mostly intended to make it MORE heritage...fishtails, solo seat, fender trim thingies, nostalgic logo footboard and pedalspads, I love how all the Harleys seem to lend themselves to improving the direction they were going in stock form.

Oh boy, you're going to hate these 🤣. My Heritage still bares the classic look, but she hides the upgraded Progressive Suspension F/R, Feuling Complete Cam upgrade, and list goes on and on. Like others have said, it's a reflection of ones own taste, style and needs.

OP.....

It is rare that anyone (Harley included) can build something with a look that will please everyone...

Some will love it, some will hate it, and some will think, "If only it didn't have..." or "If only it had..."

That's just the nature of the beast... bikes, cars, trucks, boats, etc...

I've owned two Heritage models over the years, '89 and '03. I still own the '03... For my part, I loved both bikes... BUT... I couldn't stand the fringe on the saddlebags of the '89 nor all the studs on the saddlebags of the '03... Many would argue that is a signature part of their look... but I couldn't stand them...

I ended up buying different bags for both bikes... and liked the way they looked much better with the bags I added... I'm sure many would disagree...

Oh well...

Love you’r 89 in Black and Red! My 89, Black and Cream. Loved that bike! Put over 50,000 on it before I let it go.

Those '89 Heritages were great bikes...!!

But it wasn't black & red...

They called that color "Candy Crimson and Candy Brandywine"... The "black" portion is a real deep, dark red.. In the shadows it looks black, in the sunlight it looks really cool...

I almost got an all black one, but the Crimson & Brandywine was the only one they had left when I finally decided to make the move from my 1980 FXS...

I wasn't sure about the color when I bought it... but it really grew on me...

My question is, if you want to customize the bike so badly, why not buy a much less expensive Softail standard and go at it. In my view, the Heritage Classic is just that, a Classic. Leave it alone lol. I'm somewhat guilty in customizing, but mine is the invisible kind, such as power performance type where you'd never know I did something to it. I guess us old timers call them "sleepers".
I just really like the Heritage Classic, and think that some of these customized ones just destroy the classic looks. I'm sorry if I upset some folks. Just giving my opinion, It's your bike and your money.
Comments are welcome.

A CLASSIC.
I agree....had a few of these. Specifically a 93 Moo Glide some years ago. Always one of my favorites and will always identify HD with the Heritage profile. I sold that one to get a down payment on a house...what was I thinking? Never thought about making any changes but then again in America, we tend to get tired of things pretty quickly.

I used "Saggy Bags". And yes I believe they they looked much better than the sacked out limp d**k shape they would have taken on had I not.

What's wrong with a little change here and there. take a RGU put a trike front end on it hand a twin sidecar on it and ride the heck out of it.
Do something to it anything.
