Default Thinking about swapping Heritage front end for STD.

Hey All,
I signed up for this Forum, but haven't used it since trading in my 2005 Heritage for a 2014 UL. I have a friend who sold me his old 2003 Heritage for a project bike. I'm thinking of ditching the Anniversary tins on eBay for regular tins, and I have also been thinking that I might want to change it over to more of a Standard/Bobber style.
Since I haven't looked too deep into this yet, shouldn't a swap of the Heritage front end for a Standard one be a strait swap?

I'm currently working trough some running issues, but once it's running right, I'm changing the cam chain tensioners and installing some SE cams m brother gave me.

We'll see where the project goes from there.

This is the project, in it's current state. Rear fender is on the bench.

Thanks!

Nice project. I'm in the middle of getting a salvage 2020 Heritage back on the road. Replaced front end with OEM parts. Considered going springer but talked with a few wise mechanics that said don't monkey with the front end, it will never be as good as OEM. I would leave your front end as is and spend $ on paint, then go with used air cleaner, seat and bags. Probably all in for $1K. She will look sweet (Corvette red with same emblems). Post updates.

I love the way that bike looks as it sits...!!! Maybe because I have a 2003 Heritage...

Project bikes are always fun..

To answer your question, I just looked up the frame part numbers for the 2003 Softails.

The 2003 Standard softail, Heritage, Heritage Springer, FXSTS Springer, Fat Boy, and Night Train all use frame #47008-00C. So I would suspect any front end from any of those bikes would bolt right up. I have no personal knowledge/experience on that..

The 2003 Deuce uses frame #48887-00B. That doesn't mean it's front end wouldn't bolt up, but there is a difference to the frame. I don't know where they are different, but if it's in the head, a Deuce front end on the other softails could throw off the steering geometry..

Good luck with your project..

tngarren,
Nice Project yourself! Yea, this one fell in my lap. He has had it for years, and it kept breaking down on him, so he just felt like he couldn't trust it anymore. Last shop told him the engine was hurt, so he bought a new bike. I bought it for cheap, knowing I might have to do an engine swap. It seems all the issues with running are in the EFI right now. I did a compression check and both cylinders are 150 psi. I just replaced the coil, plug wires and plugs. So next step is start working through the sensors and the EFI system. He had already bought a new seat and put new Commander IIs on it, so it's road ready, once the tensioners and running issue is handled. The tensioners were gone. Had he kept riding it, he probably would have grenaded it.

How she showed up.

Thanks! I was thinking about looking on Ronnie's HD website and look at the Microfish images, to see how I might piece something together. Ultimately, I want a springer front end, but I'm not prepared to drop $3K plus for one right now. I'll ride it a while, then look for a springer front end. Heck, I might just pull all the extra crap off the forks, and run what's on there for a while. Lot's of chrome peeling, so I'm looking at blasting and powder coating quite a few parts.

Save the tins. Bubble wrap and set aside. Someone down the road won’t give your crap without those tins. If you get lucky selling without, then make that money.

I thought about this, but let's face it. It's a 2003 Anniversary Heritage with over 90K. Just like thousands of others. It's not going to be worth anything to anyone but me. My plan is to sell the tins to someone who cares. The front fender is dented, and after seeing what the prices of 03 Ann. tins are selling for, I can sell the rear fender and tank, and then just buy something else to paint.
In realty, I wanted a Standard to customize, so maybe I'll just get it up and running and trade it for a Standard...but probably now.

I think this is your best course of action, get it running reliably, sell/trade it in on a Standard. It'll save you a bunch of work and hunting for parts, also when you do sell the modified Heritage, a lot of red flags will pop up from potential buyers when they see all the modifications. An unmolested bike will sell for much more than a highly modified one.
