Tank overflow line
Just a sanity check on the requirements for the tank overflow line on a 2002 fxst. I can't find anything on it in the service manual.
The line itself doesn't look like fuel line. It runs from the right side tank down the main chassis tube and crosses over at the carb to the left side past the oil tank and seems to just dump any overflow between the back plastic wheel guard and the transmission near the ground.
Does this need to be such a long path? Is an alternate path sufficient and is a regular 1/4" fuel line good enough?
Thanks.
But 1/4" fuel hose can be thick walled and might give you grief fitting it through tight spaces on it's way to the ground.
I'm not certain it's a 1/4" nipple on the tank. It could be 3/16".
Anyway, you can get fuel overflow hose (it's a thin walled hose) from most motorcycle shops that sell dirt bike gas tank vent hose.
That stuff comes in different colors if you have a need.
That is what I used for my overflow from the right tank on an '87 FXSTC.

That hose is to vent vapors from the fuel tank....
As you can see in this pic, your vent hose is two parts...... #19, a rubber piece from the tank nipple to the hose (more of a tube) and the tube itself, #22. It should go through a vapor valve (#28) down by the trans/frame.... the CA models actually have the vented vapors go through a charcoal canister filter in that area..
It is run to that location to facilitate the CA emissions bikes and so the escape of tank vapors isn't usually smelled by the rider.... I guess you could move it to anywhere you want, and 1/4" fuel line would probably be overkill. The hose only needs to match the ID of the tank nipple. I suspect that if you bypass the vapor valve (#28), then in hot weather, or a full tank with the engine hot, you could get a continuous smell of gasoline from the vent...
