Default 98 Softail Heritage Classic front rotor

I'm changing the front rotor on my softail and noticed the rotor has a notch in it. The notch looks like its for a key way, but i don't see anything that would go in there. Any ideas what this is for . I noticed the stock one has the same notch. I looked through manual and found no information,

Could it be for the tang on a mechanical speedo?

A 98' won't have a speedo cable. The brake rotor does carry over the notch for wider fitment parameters. Aftermarket rotors may not have it.

Yes I believe it is for a speedometer which I don’t have on front rotor. These are aftermarket rotors so they came with a reducing spacer for smaller hubs. I don’t see why I would need the spacer if I’m not running the spedo up front. Does it seem correct not to need the spacer

You will need the spacer in order for the front rotor to align with the caliper correctly. The mech speedo gear takes the place of the spacer.

Sorry I’m referring to rotor spacer for a 2” hub . It comes with new rotor. But yes you are correct, I think we talking about to separate spacers. The rotor I have is a v-factor from Dennis Kirk.

If you are only changing out a rotor, then just change out the rotor and keep the spacers as they are. The new rotor shouldn't change anything. Always check your brake caliper alignment of course. But it should be fine.

What is the best way to check alignment on caliper?

Cool

Visually inspect to see that the brake caliper and new brake pads are centered over the brake rotor. And always replace the screws when you replace the brake rotor
