Default Route 66

Has anyone taken a cycle Tour of route 66. Thinking about doing this in Sept. Just wanted to get some advise on how to go about it. How hard of a trip was it. I've had several people tell me, your too old, you don't have enough experience, blaa, blaa, blaa.
I want to see all the land I fought for, I want to see it all,
This has been a dream for many years, now I have a bike to do it. Any information ot stories of happenings along the route would be appreciated.

Years ago, the New Mexico Department of Transportation decided to spice up a particularly desolate stretch of Route 66 between Albuquerque and Tijeras by adding grooves in the road that will play music when you drive over them. If you drive the speed limit of 45 mph for the quarter-mile stretch, you can hear "America the Beautiful" play through the vibrations in your car's wheels. I've driven on it with a car, don't now if it will play on bike?

My buddy from LA and I road it from Santa Rosa to Santa Fe in 2006 on the way up to Denver from Houston. Other than a huge thunderstorm flooding 66 in Santa Rosa while we were there overnight, not much to report. It always rained when I rode him... but that was the pinnacle!

I have ridden most of RT 66 through Arizona and enjoyed it. Most of old 66 is through the towns and have to take I-40 between towns. Seligman is probably the coolest small town I have ever been to.

I don't want to spoil your ride but I think Route 66 is overrated and has too many tourist traps. Most of it has been replaced with interstate.
I have done much of it but not all.
I went across the US on the Lincoln Highway. Now that was a great ride.

The Lincoln highway was the first highway to cross the US.

EDIT: looking over my post I think I was too negative. Lincoln Highway is much longer. It goes from coast to coast. Route 66 goes from Chicago to San Diego. I say go for it. Try the Lincoln Highway another year. And I agree with ChromeJunkie Seligman is a cool little town.

I ride Rt 66 all the time. Here in Amarillo, between McMasters and Western, it has most of the Biker Bars in town, it's also a real tourist trap.

I've done most of it on my way from Ohio to Arizona. It's kind of an on/off proposition. I'd say it's definitely worth it. A lot of nostalgia, and parts of it are absolutely haunting.

You live in a great area of riding at your finger tips. Just out of curiosity, did you ever get over to Mancos and eat at Ted's Tacos before he closed? I rode down there in 2007 and ate there, had the Navajo Tacos... great!
