Sound advice..Im like you, look at the two mating surfaces then determine best application...I had heard something similar to your theory before,it was a tech at a dealership nearby..He said their rule of thumb is ,if the header pipe is rounded then mate them with the tapered OEM gasket..if its squared off ,then go with the SE type ..which is basically what you were referring to just from the cylinder head aspect of it...I am going to do a leak down test tonight...The bike is almost back to where it was running...I just took it up the mountain a while ago after a short ride yesterday..and my tuning is pretty dang close..but the sound of the bike has less of a deeper tone..now ..its more blap blap if you will...not quite popping and its different than a cough or mild backfire...I may for the hell of it look at those gaskets I put in when I went back to the VH ...I put thelarger tapered type ..where as I had been using the SE type...I am wondering if the gasket has blocked part of the port...Ive had to tighten them prob 5 times....They havent gotten loose per say, just working into shape I guess, which as I write this has me thinking maybe some deforming is happening...I also tighten by the book ..and never use any thing over a 1/4 inch ratchet...I know the dangers of cranking down on them......I will report bacvk for sure...I hadmeant to last night but my daughter tore the rearend out of her Cherokee..or it was on its way out...she hasnt had it long ,and Ive got a whole parts jeep to remedy it...time to flip it on its side and get the blue wrench fired up it seems ...anyway ..thanks for staying with me on this ..It helps ,man I appreciate the things youve given me to consider...Im kind of green at these motors ..but damn if I dont dig the hell out of it when its right...
Oh yeah..I like your solution for stubborn leaks ..may have to experiment....maybe a dumb question ,but could a mild exhaust leak cause a slight misfire cvondition? Thanks
Nevermind i think I got you now...duh..youre talking the c clip retainers?? that makes good sense, just offset I suppose..Ill let you know, how i make out.

A Harley exhaust leak, especially at the head gasket, often causes deceleration popping or even backfiring.... it can also cause decreased power and/or decreased acceleration...
Not sure I'd describe it as causing a misfire, but that could just be semantics.....
These same symptoms can be caused by an intake gasket leak...
I wanted to update this discussion ..Got the sled back to where it was before the head scratching week of trying to sort this....It happened in a strange order and that had me trying to go with process of elimination...when i shoulda just kept it simple stupid.... while I had it down I was able to replace the stator ,in a day ....Tune the CV with help from reading and visiting here. The day before when i rolled back in with the original pipes..it was raining to beat hell, the last 30 mins of my ride home..put the horse in the barn and went and climbed in the rack...next day changed pipes and all hell broke loose...turns out I had spit one of the baffles out of the Vance pipes ,but I did not notice it until I put them back on...I reckon that was the "flat" lumpy feeling I was getting rolling into the the throttle..up at speed it ran fine....it ran fine the entire time...I guess the imbalance in detonation caused it to be off sync with the opposing cylinder..Im not real sure ..but when i took the one remaining baffle out and for ***** aandf giggles I cut in half and put each half back in ..it was back to normal,a bit louder but not much...Im playing with homemade baffles for the drag pipes ,and may give em a go again...Cant thank yall enough for the time you took to steer me straight..or at least gave me things to consider.
