Never Owned a 2000 Fat Boy - Opinion?
2000 Fat Boy
8K miles
95ci big bore kit
Gear driven cams
Carbureted
New tires
I'd of course need to make certain every fluid has been addressed/brake lines flushed before I'd consider it depending on final price.
Do you think $6500 is a good price for this given it's got the 95cu in engine and gear-driven cams? I'm feeling a bit blind on a Fatty of this vintage so any opinion would be great! Lousy picture from my computer screen since the pic wouldn't download.
Thanks!
Ill be out and about tomorrow. Ill stop in and look. And no. Youre not going to find better prices. Youve seen that already.
up side to gear drive cams. No cam chain tensioners to go bad. Its all been upgraded.

I'll PM you my contact info.

In other words, I'd spend a fair amount to get it as I'd want it....versus your '02 which was much closer. So I need to consider that in the price. Maybe he'll drop since it's this time of year and consider what I want to do but I don't need to steal it.
Year: 2000
Make: Harley-Davidson
Model: FLSTF Fat Boy
Model Type: Cruiser
Displacement: 1450
Cylinders: 2
VIN: 1HD1BMY1Y
Finance Advance: $4,240
MSRP: $15,280
Avg Retail: $5,630
Auction Wholesale $4,365
Clean Trade: $4,210
Fair Trade: $3,445
But the 95" big bore and gear drive cam tensioners, if installed properly, would have value to me......
I would want to see receipts to know who's big bore kit, what cam, what compression/pistons, and how it was tuned (just carb or carb and new ICM with spark advance features)... If it was done by a good shop, I wouldn't hesitate to offer $6K and maybe even go uo to his asking price of $6500, if it was in excellent shape, with good maintenance records, and a reputable shop doing the big bore install...
If he has receipts, but did the install himself, I would pay special attention to how it runs, how it was tuned, and listen closely to the cam gear noise....
Everybody (well, most everybody) knows to check for .003" or less run-out before installing gear drive cams, but many skip the step of checking for gear lash when setting up the gear drives...
I don't know why people skip the gear lash check, but anytime someone complains about gear drive "noise".... I suspect bad run out numbers, or improper gear lash.... Gear drives sound different from chain drive cams, but don't make excessive noise... at least mine never have... I have them in an S&S 124" crate engine.
From the S&S gear drive install instructions, under a "Caution" heading:
"Too much backlash can cause excessive gear noise or clicking caused by the reversing of the forces applied by the lifters to the cam lobes. Insufficient backlash, will cause gears to whine, wear prematurely, create excess heat, and may cause breaking of the gear teeth and engine failure."
Good luck with your decision and inspection...
I recently picked up the '02 Low Rider below last year for the same really great motor as my primary goal.
Its carbed, which is good that era FI was MM. It has timken bearing. Since they went gears hopefully they changed out the rear cam bearing already. Normally I would think $6500 is to high.
As far as negoatiating price based on fluid change, how do you prove it?

The big bore and S&S G-cams, race ignition (whatever that is), and brake pads were all done in 2004 at 2500 miles. Then he also has 4 pages of records of other work done here and there. He sent me a video.
The fork lowers are severely pitted and there are two decent sized areas in the right engine case with chrome peeling/flaking. Otherwise cosmetically not bad. Fork lowers, no big deal, Id prob replace them anyway but flaking chrome ??
I like the guy selling it as he seems like a straight shooter so it most about whether its a good enough deal at even $6K to have it sit in my parking garage until it warms up (long story)! 👍🏻
