We have an 06 softail delux with 16,000 miles. Intermittently, with stock pipes and setttings and after a fuel commander with V&H longshots, the bike will just die. It will start right up. This seems to occur after it has been been in extreme heat and slow traffic. The stall happens out on the road running in a higher gear. Of course the dealer says its bad gas which is BS since we run only high octane from reputable dealers. I run the same fuel in my 05 Road King with no issue.
Thoughts??
I always enjoy helping someone with a similar problem that I have had. I have a 2005 Heritage softail, stock pipes, ignition, all that. 32,000 miles. Bought new. Granted, the difference is that mine did not start up right away but seemed to after it had cooled down a little bit. Nonetheless, the symptoms do point to a similar problem. The bike shuts down after running just fine. I inquired several times here on the forum but few would make any offers as to what it may be. But plenty people read the article. I am beginning to realize many people own these fine machines but few know much about how they function any more because when they run good, they run good, and when they crap out, HD has made it almost impossible to diagnose or repair in your garage, etc. You mentioned a bit about being stock, but then said you have added a power commander and changed pipes. and it happens when it is hot in traffic. I am a little confused at this point of the exact symptoms and status of the bike. All that being what it is, read on............Mine was diagnosed by the HDealer just before Sturgis. My symptoms were that it would die going down the road and then not want to start. Just die at highway speeds. Has 32,000 miles and from new has ran absolutely like a dream. Seemed like it would take an hour or so for it to seemingly cool down before starting. During that time it would turn over but not fire. It had no spark at the plug wire. Did you test for spark on starting?? Do you know how to do that on the bike?? I can tell you if not. Anyway, I replaced the coil but that wasn't the problem. Problem ended up being the ECM Electronic Control Module. It's purpose is to energize the System Relay (under the seat) which completes the circuit to the coil, fuel pump, and fuel injectors. See, if it is on the blink, it won't send spark and it can turn over all day long but nothing happens. Not sure what all you have going on there because you haven't said your status on some of those problems but you may not know the extent just yet. My check engine light was coming on right after the bike started and staying on for about 10 seconds and then going out. Is your check engine light coming on after you start the bike and then staying on about 10 seconds before going off?? Their machine picked up on the "code" P1001 and my problem ended up being $500 and some change. But 2500 miles to Sturgis and back trouble free since. Let me know. That is a spendy bugger to just replace on a whim plus it has to be programmed to your bike which is just about a stealer item.
did they do the injector change from 8 degree to 25? some kinda recall on them. I had some problems on my 06 fatboywith a low speed stall and decel popping the injector change and new download, all free, problem fixed. also check and see if you are getting a code. i think there is a way of checking without taking it in by using the signal light switches. look in your manual mine is not handy.
The only time I had problems with a heat like that was coming down a very windy road (8% grade and 10 mph switch backs) in 90+ degree weather
When I got to the bottom I pulled over for a breather (maybe 3 - 4 minutes) and the bikedidn't want to start at first but after another minute it started right up. I assumed it was heat related. I already had my True Duals but I do not have a fuel commander.
Thanks for everyones reply. Yesit has the newer fuel injectors in it. To clarify, i meant to say we had the problem once with the bike before any pipe\fuel packs were added. The problem has occurred twice since, in one period just after running through downtown Sturgis, the bike quit out on the freeway 5 times. However it ran fine through the heat of the desert however it did not suffer all the start stop traffic. I am suspect of the ECM. I asked the dealer if the chip should dump and error code but they looked confused. The bike always starts right up but my wife always pulls over and shuts it off and goes through a normal start up sequence. Next time she will try to start it on the run. Not sure if the lights are staying on.
