Do I need a new starter ? 2015 fat boy lo
Hello all,
Before i order a new starter. I would like to ask you guys your opinion on this.
My bike has been sitting for 2 years. Battery was dead. Hooked up a car battery and the starter just grinds. Doesn t turn the engine.

Is it doing more now that you tried jumping? If so probably battery. If started before,I would lean towards battery.
Can try leaving car on it longer,but it is shot won't help. Similar with turning amps up on battery charger for 10 minutes.
You are raising RPMs on car? If never had good luck, with out doing that.
What is voltage on battery?
This might be a good use of load test,or just replace battery.

The battery i used is brand new and fully charged.
I also tried before with a car hooked up revving the engine. no luck.
Definitely not the battery. Very different noise than the classic starter click when battery is gone.
Sounds like the starter doesn't engage the wheel correctly.

I'm not an expert, but many knowledgeable people advise that if you are jumping a Harley with car/truck, DO NOT have the vehicle running when you jump start.... It is alleged you can do damage to the electronics on the Harley, from a running motor vehicle jump start...
You were revving the engine, so it is possible you did some damage to the bike, not connected to why it wasn't starting.. It probably began with a dead battery, but now.....?
At this point,
I would disconnect the car, immediately....
I would see if the battery will hold a charge... if so...
Then I would do is check for codes...
You may have random codes due to the power surge from the car engine revving. I would note any codes, and clear them. Then try to start the bike again, without any supplemental voltage attached to the battery, and see what, if any, codes reappear...
Then armed with, or without, repeat codes, I would start my diagnosis...
