Just figured I'd do a quick writeup on the tachometer install that I recently did on my 06. This may or may not apply to your particular bike but the information is here. Start off with getting an early model Road King Police tachometer, these come with the mount and can typically be had in good condition for around $150 on eBay. You'll need to source one ECM pin from the dealer to add on the tachometer feed, the connector is numbered nicely and it is pin 3 that you'll need to tag into - feed this wire under the tank to the speedo area. Underneath the dash at the speedo you'll need two more wires from there, orange (power) and black (ground). Splice into these two and you're almost there. These will all get wired into a Deutsch DT 3 way connector. Make sure to check the pin configuration as you're putting it together.
As can be seen in the pics below, I used a green wire for the tach signal, orange for power, and black for ground.
I don't know what years exactly this will apply to, but if you check the wiring diagram and the ECM shows pin 3 as being tach out it will most likely work.
I swapped my riser clamp bolts for studs (Carb studs work great) but you can still use the bolts if you prefer.
