So ya want to install a Tach on yer dyna, and ya are not comfy crimping a Duetsch connector... me to. Well there has been write ups about connecting to pin 3 on the ECM controller. Or the pin 3 connector on the speedo connector. Eh... not me. For one I cant get a good crimp without a $75 crimper that I dont have, and 2 the number 3 on the speedo connector isnt the right spot. now that I have poo poo'd all the standard ways, lemme tell you the easy way.
On the 06 dynas the perverbial pink wire for the tach pulse has been changed. Pull your main cable loom out from the neck on the left side of the bike. Look for a LtGrn/V wire in pin 2 (not pin 3). This light green wire with a violet stripe is your tach pulse. Splice in and voila !! success. Now to get the power you can pull your tank and find the fuel guage feed. This will be 3 wires in a 4 wire connector. It will consist of an Orange, Black and yellow wire if my memory serves me. You want the black and orange wires. Black for ground and orange for the hot side. I soldered and heat shrunk everything and put it all in a nylon sleeve. You may crimp if you choose. Easy stuff, much easier than trying to crimp a Duetsch connector without the right tool. unless you are mud and can make yer tools... This was a much easier and simpler way for me. enjoy.
I just used the connector that came on the end of the tach wire in the kit. Its not a perfect fit in Pin 3 but has been there since dec with no issues.
Digging out this thread, as I'm about to install an aftermarket tach on my '11 FXDC.
After disassembling the console I could find no wire at all on pin 3 of connector [39], i.e. the connector to the speedo and like stated on many other posts another place to pick up the signal would be pin3 on the ECM connector. But:
looking at what Jarhead45 wrote above and checking the electric diagrams in the service manual, the LGN/V wire starts from connector [78] on the ECM on pin 5 , called "Serial Data", and is than split to connect to the DLC and then:
-to the Speedo via connector [39] on FXDC, FXDF and FXDWG, or
-via connector [20] to the speedo on FXDB and to speedo and tacho on FXDL.
Therefore, does the same wire , LGN/V - Serial Data, carry BOTH speedo and tacho signal?
I'm trying to install an aftermarket speedo/tach combo from Speedhut on my 07 SB. I was wondering about the databus (LTG/V) wire also. Does any know if it works as a tach signal for an 07 Dyna ?
Thanks for the info. I will try that when our weather here warms up a little. Just had 8 in. snow so no hurry on it. I will let you know if it works. Lou

Did you figure out how to get connected at the tach housing? As in, what connector goes in there? Looks like there are 6 pins on the newer tachs, but only 3 pins are used (hot, ground, signal), but I don't know what connector to purchase to plug into a stock, late-model HD tach.
