After being ridden a bit and doing a stop and recrank, i have noticed a bit of a "clanging sound" when restarting my bike. After it is cranked, no problem. This does not occur when the bike is first started in the morning. Harley Fatboy has 40,200 miles. Starter going bad? Compensator? No noise is noticed after bike is cranked.

Some basic things I do myself (oil changes, brake fluid replacement etc), bottom line - find an independent mechanic. If you want to try the suggestions here, go for it. A little overwhelmed? Let me tell you up front, the HD dealer doesn't want you to bring in an 08. In fact, they quit making some essential parts for the older softails (in my experience, had to pay 3X more for a TSM).
I had a similar issue as yours and was going to rebuild the starter - got the parts and thought it was a piece of cake - in the end, a bit overwhelming.
Can you do a google search for your area and find an indie? Mine is friendly, they (some?) can even be consulted if you want to try and diagnose over the phone. If not, they will diagnose and fix it. The winter months are less busy for them anyway.
