On my non-cruise control bikes, I just tighten the adjusting screw thumb wheel....
I don't use it a lot, but it works to give me an occasional, short break on longer rides....
My brother used to do this, got himself in a lil situation. where he couldn't back it off in time. Almost lost it. The Cruisemate is easy. Works for me anyway.

This is what I do as well. I actually leave a some tension on the thumb screw, on longer cruises, so I can have a relaxed grip. I leave it loose enough that the carb throttle return spring is strong enough to close the throttle if I can't for some reason.
Hey Ranger, maybe recheck the install. Both Brakeaways I installed were very solid. Had to ensure the inner rubber ring fit firmly but everything tightened fine. Needed some fine tuning but so far works great.
