Default Vance and hines short shots on a carberated 2002 harley fatboyI have a set of Vance and Hines short shots on my carbureted 2002 harley fat boy. I have a small back fire and popping on deceleration. Is this normal? My intake is not leaking and my exhaust is not leaking. I have the stock carburetor on it.. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance
I also have the super quiet baffles with a 5/8 inch hole drilled in the end of them. and my carburetor idle screw is 3 turns out from softly seated.
OP.... I had V&H longshots on my 2001 and was able to tune it so there was no decel pop or backfires. I have heard the shortshots can be a little more finicky to tune... but I have no experience with them.
On your OEM CV40 carb, there is an EPA mandated plug blocking the A/F mixture screw. If it is still in place on your carb, the bike has never been tuned before. When tuning a carbed HD with the CV40 carb, that plug is the firt thing removed.
There is a process for tuning the CV40 carb that always starts & ends with the mixture screw. The micxture screw setting determines if a bigger pilot jet is needed, and after any jet/needle change, you always go back to dialing in the mixture screw... There are instructions/guides on the CV Performance web site that can help if you are unfamiliar with the CV40 carb. My only warning, there are many that used to recommend drilling a small hole in the CV40 slide... Don't do it, better to properly tune it...

FWIW... Every bike is different, but just for comparison: my 2001 88" Twin Cam with CV40 carb, SE high flow air filter, and V&H straight shot exhaust ran extremely well (I have recently changed exhaust, retuned, and it still runs very well). I used the OEM jets (45/190), CV Performance velocity needle, and the mixture screw at about 2 turns.
Good luck with your carb tuning...

"Keep in mind that the ShortShots Staggered are a short drag style pipe. They will pop and backfire. That is what they are designed to do. We may never get to zero popping since we are fighting what the exhaust was designed to do."
