Default I give up

I have already striped out one spark plug and it cost me a lot to fix so I dont want to do it again. I just needed a simple answer. I know its 1/4 turn for new plugs but I just needed an answer for used plugs. Is it 1/4 turn or 1/8 turn?

I would have to go and remove one of my plugs and install. I have always gone by feel. I would guess that once the plug is seated, another 1/8 turn should have it tight.

Remember that a loose plug can mess up the threads and make the engine run badly, as a too tight plug can damage the plug and the threads.

Hope this helps,
Tom

You need a torque wrench.

I have one but I dont know what to torque the plugs to. I have already striped one spark plug out by going 150 inch lbs. or 12.5 ft lbs. as per manual. thats why I need to know if 1/8 of a turn is ok for used plugs. That way I can put my torque wrench on them and see what torque they are.

same.
but our friend Gerry has already stripped one

Gerry, I don't know the right way or wrong way, just "my" way that hasn't caused me any troubles yet
so for what it's worth...my calibrated fingers and palm suggests I torque mine (new or used) to roughly 20 ft lbs, car, bike, boat or lawnmower

WHOA Nellie

something wrong with your torque wrench or you're sure you didn't cross thread the plug?

I'll note, I had a plug come loose once (don't recall what was, and fortunate it didn't screw up the head threads)
so I tend to snug them up pretty good ever since
I'm sure I'm in the 20 ft lbs or more range

This is from NGK and should be your plug if I entered your model correctly, read the torque spec since you can't feel how tight you are going:

https://www.ngk.com/ngk-3932-dcpr7e-nickel-spark-plug

Make sure your torque wrench is correct and your reading foot or inch pounds. NGK calls for FOOT pounds. I would go with the lower setting. But you stated you only went to 12 foot pounds and stripped one????

Maybe I'll pull a plug tomorrow and see about what the turn is.

After writing the above and then thinking about what you said..... I think the best option for you is to have a trusted friend or family tighten them for you. You might also just want to put a new plug (or at least replace the gasket ) in every time so that there is no issue on how much to tighten an already crushed gasket.

The only time I tried a torque wrench on a spark plug, I felt I over tightened it. I know the wrench was reading correct.
