Handle bars and extension kit
It there any tips and tricks you all can give me concerning this process? I plan on running the wires inside the bars.
Does the tank need drained and completely removed or can it be lifted enough to unplug the harness?
I haven't looked at the directions in the kit yet, guess I should do that.
Hoping to start after lunch tomorrow and hopefully get it done in time to ride a little bit this weekend. Sullpose to be up in the 50s Saturday and Sunday. 🙂
Couple notes.
I was able to get the harness unplugged by unbolting the tank, disconnecting the fuel line at the carburetor, pulling the vent off the front of the tank and removing the dash. I pulled the tank back as far as it would go with the seat removed and battery disconnected. I didn't remove the crossover hose and it was the limiting factor in how far the tank would go back. But able to save the factory crossover clamps by going this route. I also covered the tank with a jacket while working on the bike.
The Burly kit seems put together pretty well and the wiring extentions were easier to do than I expected. I used their provided diagram and wrote down all the wired colors and took plenty of pictures.
The cables and brake line seem well made although I with the throttle cables were beefier, time will tell on those.
I drained the trans and took off the side cover being careful to take pictures. I also watched a yt video on replacing the cable and that was very helpful.
I will say both the video and a friend told me I would have to take the derby cover off and relase clutch pressure to get the trans cover back on. On my bike this was not the case. The side cover sent right back on with no issue.
Bleeding the front brake was a pain. I had forgotten how difficult they could be. It's been over 20 years since I've had to mess with bleeding harley brakes. Luckily a friend had a nifty tool that hooked up to the bleeder valve and an air compressor and sucked the air and fluid down through the system. It's worked really well.
Everything adjusted out well in the garage and needed no other further adjustment after riding the bike. I just came in from a 30 mile ride, about half highway and half backroads, and am very happy with the results. I'm looking forward to more riding tomorrow if the temp gets up to what they say it will.
