Correct Oil Filter Part #
Every time I go to the Harley Dealer they give me an oil filter with a different part #, or another part that is wrong.
My Bike: 2020 FLHC (Heritage Classic 107 Engine).
From the time I bought the bike I have been using part # 63798-99A Chrome Oil Filter.
The filter they gave last time was so far off it was for a completely different engine. I just threw it away since the dealer was so far.
The one they gave me yesterday was part # 62700297A. Does this one just supersede the other one above, or is it wrong again?
It was so nice when I could order parts online and HD stopped this, because I could always look it up and get the right part #, not the wrong one form a new trainee or just the latest incompetent person that previously worked at White Castle. How difficult is this?

1. Filter for EVO models, includes Sportsters.
2. Filter for Twin Cam models.
3. Filter for M8 models.
According to the HD parts listing, yours takes:
62700296A
FILTER,OIL,BLACK | (black)
This part replaces 62700296.
Price: $15.95
Chrome is: 62700297A, $18.95, guess they are up-selling you to a chrome filter.

My real important question is whether the 63798-99A number that I have been using was just superseded and why (Just an inventory stock number change, a better filter, etc), and whether it is OK to still use it as I dug up 2 I still have left in stock.
Yes I did see the 62700296A on their website, and yes I did ask for the chrome one, and the 62700297A part number is so close that I am hopefully assuming correctly that the small part number difference just indicates the chrome version.

Yes, you can still use the old filters....

Thanks, big help as the video explains it all. They can both be used, but the 62700297A supersedes the old on because, as the video points out, HD realized that the M8 needed more surface area due to the increased flow rate of the M8.

Why didn`t you have the correct part number with you when you went to the parts counter, since you think everyone there is a moron?
The Best of Harley-Davidson for Lifelong Riders
Look at the part numbers in that 2020 video.....
Doc Harley is talking about the #62700297 oil filter as the one that was "specifically designed" for the increased flow of the M8. The #627000297A is a further "update" of that filter.
And don't forget....
The M8 went through its engineering, prototype testing, and allegedly went through 5 years & 1,000,000 miles of real world testing before its introduction. It was using the #63731-99B oil filter.
No one thought it needed a newer, slightly bigger, oil filter through all that testing and evaluation.
Then after its introduction, it went through 2 years of production and customer use, all with the same filter as the Twin Cam....
Hate to sound jaded, but it wouldn't be the first time the MoCo came out with something new and pushed it as an improvement, just to make a bit more money, when the status quo was just fine. I could rattle two right off the top of my head.
You'll be OK using your old filters..
