i have a 2002 harley fatboy with the frankenstein trike kit instaled.. the motor is completly stock but wth vance and hines short shots with the quiet baffles. The manual say to use premium gas in it (91 octaine) but I looked it up and it says it is not a high compression engine. So is it ok to burn regular gas (87 octain)
Try stepping down grade by grade if you are looking to save money on fuel. Try 89 and listen for any pinging / detonation, then proceed down to the 87. But do not fill the tank. Get to reserve and add say 2 gallons of the 89. Take into account, it will take a couple of times back to reserve and adding the 89 before you have a true 89 due to what is in the tank before adding. If the 89 works fine - then you might try the same procedure with 87.
The other option is empty the tank and home and start with the fuel of choice. Again, only enough to try it - If it pings get some Premium in that FatBoy.
Personally, I would stay with premium zero eth and worry about saving a few bucks somewhere else - But you were wanting some kind of answer and input, so I gave you mine.
The bottom line is your Trike has a few more load than the standard FatBoy motorcycle and you do not want detonation happening.
Not sure where you live or if you have to store for the winter. I have to store for winter so I just put non ethanol in all season long. Same for any seasonal small engine like yard equipment. In my area all the non ethanol is 90 octane.
